Small-scale model ‘KOBALAMI’

Rationale of use

In the Netherlands, the Cost Benefit Analysis and Input/Output analysis (KOBALAMI) allows for a better understanding of the impacts of changes/shocks along the agri-food chain. It also quantifies avoided environmental damages related to potential interventions, and also captures important chain effects (ex-ante) that are often overlooked, even though they are not the primary focus of CAP.

Functioning

The tool is a CBA (cost-benefit analysis) tool with an IO (input-output) component can be used in combination with other modelling tools such as AGMEMOD, Farm-Dyn or MITERRA-Europe. Besides the usual functionalities of the CBA approach, e.g. net present value calculations, consolidated indicators of total costs and total benefits of a particular investment, etc., this model acts as an ‘integrator’ tool that brings together elements from different aspects of the Dutch food system and provides a quantification in monetary terms of the economic consequences of various shocks to the system, e.g. implementation of emission reduction measures, herd reductions, changes in the size of the Dutch agro-complex etc.

Types of outputs

The tool provides quantitative indicators related to baseline/scenarios.
