Small-scale model ‘Eco-scheme modelling’

Rationale of use

In Germany, a joint model was developed by integrating three distinct quantitative farm-level models to address the complex aspects of eco-scheme intervention design: the Ecoscheme simulation tool, FARMDYN, and AGMEMOD. FARMDYN is used to simulate the effects of eco-scheme choices on farm income. As part of this integrated approach, the Dutch version of the AGMEMOD model is updated to align with the CAP Strategic Plans and serves as an input for FARMDYN analysis.

Functioning

The tool follows a structured approach to evaluate ecological and economic impacts at various stages: 1. Preliminary evaluation: This stage assesses the potential ecological and economic effects based on initial drafts of eco-scheme intervention descriptions. It includes analyzing agricultural structure, ecological classification, regional economic effects, and funding needs. 2. Cost estimation and implementation: The tool estimates the costs of farming without synthetic chemicals, evaluates eco-scheme implementation across different farm types and sizes, and calculates the budgetary requirements for these schemes. 3. Secondary budget assessment: In this stage, the tool assesses the impact of different design options and premium levels for eco-schemes, including projected uptake rates. It also evaluates the influence of key assumptions and discusses uncertainties that may affect the uptake of eco-schemes.

Types of outputs

The tool provides scenarios with different premium amounts and estimates for measure claims and required budget.
