Large-scale model ‘GLOBIOM’
Rationale of use
GLOBIOM (Global Biosphere Management Model) captures the complex interconnections between agriculture, forestry, and bioenergy production systems. By integrating variables like population dynamics, ecosystems, technology, and climate, it supports the formulation of comprehensive agricultural policies. This tool is being tested in one of the Case Studies of Tools4CAP.Functioning
The tool integrates the agricultural, bioenergy, and forestry sectors while utilizing comprehensive socioeconomic and geospatial data. The model incorporates 18 globally significant crops, a range of livestock production activities, forestry commodities, and both first- and second-generation bioenergy, along with water resources. The supply side of GLOBIOM is represented at the spatially explicit level of simulation units, which take into account biophysical factors such as land and soil characteristics, management practices, and local weather conditions.Types of outputs
The tool delivers outputs on land use changes (in hectares), greenhouse gas emissions (in tons of CO2e), water use through irrigation, fertilizer use, and commodity prices. It also provides projections for the supply and demand of both agricultural and forestry products.Relevant CAP objective
